In Chinese, peng you means friend. But in any language, all Anna knows for certain is that friendship is complicated.

When Anna needs company, she turns to her books. Whether traveling through A Wrinkle in Time, or peering over My Side of the Mountain, books provide what real life cannot—constant companionship and insight into her changing world.

Books, however, can’t tell Anna how to find a true friend. She’ll have to discover that on her own. In the tradition of classics like Maud Hart Lovelace’s Betsy-Tacy books and Eleanor Estes’ One Hundred Dresses, this novel subtly explores what it takes to make friends and what it means to be one.

I read this book after my sister got it. It was ok, but I think she liked it better than me. It's a good story about friends.

This is a good book! You can join as she has fun with her friends! I recommend this book to anyone! I think anybody can enjoy this book!

Warning! This review contains spoilers. Anna is basically losing her best friend, Laura, to two other girls. So now pretty much her only friend is the school crossing guard, Ray. Anna likes to read and uses books to entertain herself because she doesn't have any friends. This book basically just tells you about her life over the course of a year. What I thought of it: Well Anna wasn't the best main character. She was pretty boring and didn't seem to have much of a real personality. She likes reading and making bags and stuff. That's pretty much it. I thought the friendship between Anna and Laura was pretty weak and uninteresting. They become best friends again through the course of the book, but it's never really clear why. The other girl is mean to Laura so Laura crawls back to Anna. That's it. There's no real big dramatic moment were they realize how much they mean to each other. One second Anna doesn't want to hang out with Laura, but she does anyway. The next she actually does want to hang out with Laura, they hang out, and everything's peachy. And it's never really clear why Anna does want to hang out with Laura. She just tries to avoid her for no reason at all. I found the thing with Laura's family interesting, but confusing. If they were friends for all that time, why didn't Anna already know what Laura's family was like? And what's wrong with Laura's dad? It's never clear. She just basically says that her parents fight all the time, and that her dad yells and breaks things. What's wrong with Laura's mom? She makes it seem like her mom's perfectly fine, but she's obviously not. There has to be a reason her parents fight all the time. I could go on and on. Overall, this book was boring and I didn't like it.

Hmm.. I really like your review! I think Anna wants to hang out with Laura because.. well, she was her best friend. And Anna still feels like Laura is her best friend, and she's just.. jealous of those other girls who aren't including her. I still don't feel comfortable with Laura being Anna's friend. I mean, she just hung out with other girls and now since THEY'RE ignoring her, she's going to her second choice, Anna? I did like this book because of.. well, I guess, because I can relate. I've been ignored by a bunch of friends and I'm still an outcast in my school. I often seek the help of books to feel I truly have friends among books. I don't know.. I see your point. (WHY IS THIS GETTING EMOTIONAL) : References; My life.

Yeah, it really is cool to find a book at you can really relate to. I really like books because they help me feel emotions that I can't get from the outside world. Personally I've never really been in a group of good friends, so I've never had the chance to be ignored by a group of friends. But I'm sorry that happened to you. I hope you find new friends if you haven't already :).

I loved this book! It is very well written! I loved the characters! Its such a wonderful book! It is a great book to read while you lounge by the pool! (:

I like that she likes to read so many books. I know it is hard to make friends. Anna learns how to be a real friend.

Anna Wong is a fourth grade girl living out the year in America. Her family is from China so you would think she could speak Chinese but she's not even interested in it yet.

This was a short but interesting book. I think at some points it was boring and I lost intrest. Although other than that it was an okay story.

Honestly, I thought this book was really boring. The storyline was great but I think it just didn't appeal to me. It might to some other people, but not to me.

I love this book. it is about a 4th grade girl named Anna Wong who loves to read. She also has a friend Laura that she gets to know better in the middle of the book and they become best friends. This is a great book for girls who love to read.
