This timeless Newbery Honor Book from bestselling author Katherine Paterson about a wisecracking, ornary, completely unforgettable young heroine. Now a feature film starring Kathy Bates, Glenn Close, and Octavia Spencer!
Eleven-year-old Gilly has been stuck in more foster families than she can remember, and she's hated them all. She has a reputation for being brash, brilliant, and completely unmanageable, and that's the way she likes it. So when she's sent to live with the Trotters—by far the strangest family yet—she knows it's only a temporary problem.
Gilly decides to put her sharp mind to work and get out of there fast. She's determined to no longer be a foster kid. Before long she's devised an elaborate scheme to get her real mother to come rescue her. Unfortunately, the plan doesn't work out quite as she hoped it would...

This book shows always expect the worst.
this book is asome
This book is great! It's well-written and it teaches you to be grateful for what you have. I was pretty disappointed with the ending, but it was alright because Gilly learns to not act so tough all the time. Overall, Katherine Paterson wrote a great book!!!
I read this book ,because some other classmates read it and like it. I the reson I gave it only 3 stars is ,because the ending was not what I expected and I was looking for the other half of the book :)

Just finished this book! So, this book is about how a girl named Gilly is put into a foster home, because her mom is trying to find a job. Gilly gets placed with the 'religous' Maime Trotter, William Ernest {W.E.}, and the African American; Mr. Randolph who is blind, and at first she was not happy about it. Then Gilly steals some money and decides to run away to California because her mom lives there, but unfortunately she gets caught. She ends up still staying at Trotter's house, until her grandmother who she never knew about shows up suddenly one day.
This is a really good book so far
