A Texas eight-grader and his football coach are making the headlines this week, for pulling off what will probably go down as one of the most amazing and hilarious tricks in the game's history.
The incident unfolded on Saturday afternoon, during a championship match between Wynn Seale and Driscoll Middle School in Corpus Christi, Texas. About three-quarters way through the game, with Driscoll down 6-0, the opposing defense team was called for a 5-yard penalty.
As the Driscoll team huddled, the quarterback, Jason Garza declared loudly that the penalty was mismarked and that the referees were adding five more yards. The Wynn Seale defense team not only heard the comment, but actually believed it - So, when Jason casually took the football and started walking slowly as if counting the five extra yards, they just stood around, not realizing that play had already begun.
As soon as he went beyond the defense line, the poker-faced eighth-grader sprinted the remaining 67-yards pursued by just one member of the opposing team who suddenly realized they had all been duped.
Coach John De Los Santos, who thought up this play, said that when they practiced for it, they knew that the result could be one to two things. Jason would either get sacked immediately or, if they were really fortunate, score a touchdown - Lucky for them, that's exactly what happened.
While Driscoll missed the extra point following the touchdown and the teams ended up sharing the title, it was truly a memorable championship - One that neither school will forget for many years to come.
